What is a Marijuana Drug Test?

A marijuana drug test is a form of biological technical analysis that can determine if delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is present in the human body. THC is the active chemical in marijuana that produces psychoactive sensations when inhaled or ingested.

What Does a Marijuana Drug Test Test For?

A marijuana or THC drug test specifically detects the presence of marijuana in the body. Most often, this is determined by identifying whether or not delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is present. However, tests are available that will detect some of the other chemicals contained in cannabis, such as CBD (cannabidiol), CBV (cannabivarin), and CBC (cannabichromene).

Typically, there must be at least 50mL of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol present in a sample in order for a THC test to work. Otherwise, the test will likely be inconclusive.

What Types of Marijuana Tests Are Available and How Do They Work?

The two methods of at-home testing for THC that are used most commonly are:

  1. Marijuana Urine Tests

THC remains in the urine for up to 45 days. Thus, THC urine tests are highly accurate and can be used to determine if marijuana has been ingested or inhaled within a considerable time frame. These tests require an individual to urinate into a sterile collection cup. The sample is then analyzed by submerging a dip card in the urine. They indicate there is THC in urine by displaying a single rose pink line in the control region of the display window, and NO line in the test region (see below).

  1. Oral Marijuana Tests

THC remains in the saliva for up to 30 days, depending on how frequently it is used and the amount that is ingested or inhaled each time.

This type of weed drug test is completed by swabbing the inside of the individual’s mouth.

With Countrywide Testing’s Oral Cube Screens, the swab should be left in the mouth for up to three minutes to ensure enough saliva is absorbed. The swab is then placed inside a sealed, sterile test tube and placed on a flat surface. The tube should remain vertical and undisturbed while waiting for results to appear.

All results will appear within 10 minutes of sealing the swab within the test tube.

Some businesses and organizations prefer to administer hair follicle tests, since they can detect the presence of marijuana over a larger time span— up to 90 days, in most cases.

The only drawback of hair follicle THC drug tests is that they can not be completed at home. The hair sample must be sent to a laboratory where it can be professionally tested.

With this being said, Countrywide Testing does offer at-home hair follicle tests that individuals can use to collect a hair sample. This sample can then be sent to our state-of-the-art laboratory for conclusive, industry-leading analysis.
