What is a 5 Panel Drug Test?

A 5 panel drug test is a device that detects the presence of five different substances in the human body.

What Does a 5 Panel Drug Test Test For?

A 5 panel drug test is capable of detecting the following:

  • Cannabis/THC/Marijuana
  • Opiates
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines/Methamphetamines

These common illicit drugs are often top of mind for employers who want to ensure they are hiring new employees that will not pose any safety risks, or for healthcare professionals who need to determine if street drugs are causing any of the symptoms a patient may be presenting.

Unfortunately, however, a 5 panel drug screen does not detect any prescription drugs that are commonly abused or used improperly, including benzodiazepines like Ativan and Xanax.

It is a prevalent misconception that employers should only be concerned about illegal drugs or narcotics when testing potential employees.

Recently, a study showed that 70 percent of employers report prescription drug misuse is having an impact on their workplace.

If you are a business owner who is looking to purchase drug testing devices to enhance your workplace screening efforts, we recommend looking at more comprehensive options like our 10 panel tests or 12 panel tests, as they will protect your business from workplace accidents and hazards related to prescription drug abuse and addiction.

How Does a 5 Panel Drug Test Work?

Five panel drug tests are administered differently depending on the type of device you buy.

Below is a brief overview of the three main types of 5 panel tests:

  1. 5 Panel Urine Drug Tests

These are the most widely used 5 panel drug tests, as they are quick and convenient to complete. 5 panel urine drug tests are administered by having the individual urinate into a sterilized collection cup.

If you use a Countrywide Testing 5 Panel Quickscreen Cup, the easy-to-read results window is built into the collection cup itself, eliminating the need to dip a test strip into the urine.

With our traditional quickscreen dip cards, however, the card will need to be manually submerged into the urine sample.

Both of these 5-panel drug test devices are able to provide results in 5 minutes or less. Simply wait until the lines begin to show in the test and control regions of the results window.

  1. 5 Panel Hair Drug Tests

A hair follicle drug screen is completed by cutting approximately 100-150 hairs from a discrete area of the head. For individuals who are bald, body hair can also be used during these tests.

After the hair is collected, it is placed into a sealed test tube and sent to a laboratory for further testing.

Many businesses and organizations opt to administer hair follicle tests because they are far less cheating methods that can be used to pass them. Hair follicle tests also allow employers to determine if drugs have been used within a larger time frame, with some drugs being detectable in the hair for up to four months.

Unfortunately, however, 5 panel hair drug tests can only be completed by sending the samples to a laboratory facility. And they are also more expensive than urine devices.

For this reason, Countrywide Testing only offers an 18-panel ezHome Hair Follicle Test. This test checks for the presence of all drug types, making it a comprehensive testing solution. The test is administered at home or in a healthcare facility and the hair sample is sent to our industry-leading laboratory, with results being sent out within 3-7 business days.

If you are a customer who would prefer more immediate results, we recommend sticking to our 5 panel urine drug tests or our saliva 5 point drug tests.

  1. Saliva 5 Panel Drug Tests

Saliva drug screens detect the presence of drugs in the molecules of the mouth. These tests are comparable to urine tests in terms of accuracy, with both methods offering a 99 percent rating.

The biggest difference between oral 5 panel drug screens and urine tests is that oral tests are able to detect the presence of drugs more immediately. This is because urine tests have to wait until the substance has been absorbed by the body and made its way through the urinary tract. With saliva, however, drugs can be detected within minutes of being ingested, inhaled, or injected.

For this reason, saliva drug tests are often used by employers or healthcare professionals who want to test a chronic, daily user to determine if they have used a specific substance recently.

These tests are simple to administer. A cotton swab is used to soak up saliva from within the mouth and then the swab is placed into a sterile, sealed test tube.

With Countrywide Testing Quickscreen 5 Panel Saliva Drug Tests, the detection device is built directly into the tube, providing clear, easy-to-read results in as little at 15 minutes.
